Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Garcia Disc question

Dick's Gift was a couple dics of Garcia stuff from 73/74. It was supposedly from some unlabeled reel/s he found in the vault. I don't have the specifics on when it came out and how that name got attached to it, other than the obivous theory that it was a gift from Dick.

I think upon further research most of it all turned out to be from 1/17/74. The song you speak of is usually referred to as "Are You Lonely For Me Baby?" Fantastic and rare tune, twas really the song that first got me into early/mid 70's Jerry (2/9/74 specifically, still is a huge favorite, as well as 6/30/72 I think it is?).

Anyway, to answer your question, yes, the jam>lonely for me>After Midnight is indeed from Dick's Gift.

I personally have 4 different sources listed as 1/17/74 (one of them just being a matrix of 2 of the other sources). The one specifically labeled Dick's Gift has this info attached...

"DICK'S GIFT"

Disk 1:

Per www.thejerrysite.com:

??/??/74 Unknown Venue, Unknown City, Unknown State

1. Finders Keepers 10:12
2. Think 9:12
3. Lala 11:34
4. I Second That Emotion 14:31
5. My Funny Valentine 23:59

Comments: This tape circulates labeled "LOM Mystery Tape", and usually with 4 songs before Finders Keepers (see ??/??/73). These songs are from the winter or spring of '74, before Martin Fierro became a fulltime member. Supposedly found in vault unlabled by Dick Latvala. It is doubtful that all these songs are from the same show.

Recordings: 71 SBD (MSR>DATs>CDRs>EAC>SHN)

Disk 2:

Per www.thejerrysite.com:

??/??/73

1. Jam > 2:56
2. Jam > 11:57
3. Are You Lonely For Me Baby? > 11:37
4. After Midnight 8:12

Comments: Usually circulates with the ??/??/74 portion, but is probably from the winter or spring of '73. Supposedly found in vault unlabled by Dick Latvala. There is a guest guitarist for all four songs, possibly Tom Fogerty.

Recordings: 36 SBD (MSR>DATs>CDRs>EAC>SHN)

I patched this version with portions from the primary audience (MAC > D > CD > EAC > SHN shnid 10024), secondary audience (unknown lineage) and Dick's Gift (MSR>DATs>CDRs>EAC>SHN). I am going with the consensus that this portion of the show was from 1/17/74 even though the audience was listed as 1/18/74 as it matched the aud note for note. The Dick's Gift material also matched both the sbd and the audience.

My intent was to use this sbd with the aud sources and the Dick's Gift for creating a dts version of this show. I matched the speed of this recording to the Dick's Gift - it was a bit fast overall (about 1.5 second per minute). I also switched the left and right tracks in order to match Merle on left track and Jerry on right as it is on Dick's Gift. All TAO gaps were removed during patching.

Performed the following patches:
1) First 7.036 of Someday Baby patched from audience to give better lead in. The rest of Someday Baby came from sbd source.
2) The next 2 minutes of Someday Baby were inserted from a fix patch sent to me by Bob. "I fixed most of the digisnits from the aud source which was adjusted to match (when it was an improvement). A couple of the smaller ones the cure was worse than the fix so I left them, I also adjusted leveling problems in the sbd source."
3) Between Someday Baby and LaLa - 20.277 was missing from sbd - patched and normalized from audience.
4) 2 sec gap was removed from between (all) tracks on sbd source.
5) LaLa came from Dick's Gift.
6) 2:20 between LaLa and Second That Emotion filled in from sbd source.
7) Second That Emotion came from Dick's Gift.
8) 1:12 between Second That Emotion and My Funny Valentine filled in from sbd source.
9) My Funny Valentine came from Dick's Gift.
10) First 13.288 of Who's Lovin' You Tonight patched from primary audience to start disk 2.
11) Who's Lovin' You Tonight from sbd source.
12) Last 13.425 of Who's Lovin' You Tonight patched from primary audience to end Set 1.
13) First 39.500 of Finders Keepers from sbd source.
14) Finders Keepers came from Dick's Gift.
15) 1:12 between Finders Keepers and Think filled in from sbd source.
16) Think came from Dick's Gift.
17) Rest of the show comes from sbd source.
18) 0:56 at start of Harder They Come patched in from secondary audience source

Disc 2 is from 5-5-73 and that first tune is Here, There and Everywhere off Revolver by The Beatles. The ensuing jam is totally insane and drifts so nicely into on the the sweeter versions of Are You Lonely for Me, Baby?

Thanks for that! I have the first "Dick's Gift" disc, but not the second. I was just listening this weekend while working in the garden. I don't even remember when I got my copy, downloaded from a no longer operational site I'm sure. I had not heard it a long while, then it gets mentioned again on the Archive in a short amount of time. Just the sort of coincidence about which a Dead Head can be easily amused...

Glad to see there are others who have enjoyed this Dicks Gifts selection as I have. Its just freakin' sweet playing.

If anyone knows how to get a hold of Tigerbolt, let me know, or ask him for me, as I don't. Its been fun talking about this and getting educated.

Thanks to all those who threw in some info.

Oh, also, I also emailed an address I found when I was poking around. I'll leave his name out of it not sure if he wants it out there, but he was very helpful and had this to say. Some interesting food for thought.

"Thanks for the kind words.

What I had on the dats was "Dicks Gifts". It was a bunch of random tracks that were given as a wedding present. It isn't a JGB or GD show. the thought is that it is legion of mary with tom fogerty(brother of john fogerty) on the second guitar.

how is that for a shock to the system.

yes, it is called are you lonely for me, by al green. when it doesnt have the extra lyrics it's often called last train. it was only played once by GD so it couldn't be them.

hope that answered your questions. its the best we have, so we didn't list it.

all the best"

I forgot to note that the specific version of lonely for me is NOT from 1/17/74. MOST of Dick's Gift is from 1/17, but not all. I have the date for the version with the jam into After Midnight, but I can't recall the date offhand. Go to the jerry site and do a search for lonely for me, it was only played at most a dozen times, so you can easily figure out the date.
